- Coincidental minor and/or major penalties of equal duration may be
substituted for, but all penalized players must serve their full
time on the penalty bench, and wait for a whistle.
- If a player incurs a misconduct penalty in addition to a minor,
double minor, or major, then that player must serve both penalties
in succession. A substitute player must be placed on the penalty bench
to serve the minor, double minor, or major, and that substitute may
return to the ice after the expiration of that penalty.
- If a team is shorthanded by one or more penalties, that team
may legally ``ice'' the puck.
- If a goal is scored against a team which is shorthanded by one
or more minor or bench minor penalties, then the penalty
which terminates is the first minor or bench minor penalty
(non-coincident) then being served by the ``shorthanded'' team.
This does not apply to a goal scored on a penalty shot.
- The coach or captain will designate a player to serve any bench minor
penalty.
- Any minor, major, or misconduct penalty incurred by a goalkeeper
shall be served by a teammate on the ice at the time the infraction
occurred.
- If a third player receives a penalty when his team is already
shorthanded by two players, he shall enter the penalty bench, and his
penalty time shall not commence until one of the other two penalties
ends. However, a substitute for the third penalized player may
enter the game. This means that no team shall ever skate with
less than four players (including the goalkeeper).
- It is usually at the discretion of the referee whether to assess a
minor, double minor, or major penalty for a particular infraction.
In general, if an injury results from the infraction, a major
penalty should be assessed. However, an injury is not the only
criterion for assessing a major penalty.
- Any player who incurs five penalties in one game receives an
automatic game misconduct as well.
- Any player who incurs a second major penalty in one game receives an
automatic game misconduct penalty (which replaces any other required
game misconduct penalty for the major itself), plus a two-game
suspension (not the typical one-game suspension).
